Sally Ride Science and Cool Globes Partner to Showcase Cool Careers Working in the Field of Climate Change
Sally Ride Science™ and local artist Michelle Bassler teamed up to create a globe featuring some of the "cool careers" working in the field of climate change. These inspiring scientists research why Earth's climate is changing and investigate ways to restore our planet's natural balance. Sally Ride Science publishes classroom materials on Climate Change, Earth's Precious Resources, and Science Careers. These unique readers fuel a student's natural curiosity through cutting-edge science and real-world examples that demonstrate the many faces and backgrounds of today’s renowned scientists.
Sally Ride Science is committed to minimizing its environmental impact by using ecologically sound practices, including printing books using ink made from soy and linseed, and on paper made with 100 percent recycled fiber, 50 percent post-consumer waste, bleached without chlorine, and manufactured using 100 percent renewable energy.
Cool Globes is public art with a purpose, designed to inspire public dialogue and encourage individuals, corporations and government officials to take action to stop global warming. Cool Globes was inspired by Chicago-area environmental activist and mother of four Wendy Abrams who wanted to do something to showcase what people can do to help combat global warming. Cool Globes premiered last summer in Chicago, where the exhibit became a "must see" destination for millions of visitors to the city's Museum Campus along the lakefront. In 2008 Cool Globes traveled to Washington, D.C. and was on display at the U.S. Botanic Garden. The globes then moved to Crissy Field in San Francisco. The exhibit will next travel to Los Angeles (Spring 2009) and London (Spring 2009).
The exhibit has partnered with the renowned San Diego Natural History Museum to bring these beautiful pieces of inspirational art to the City. The Cool Globes exhibits in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles have been underwritten through the generous support of Toyota. Local support for the San Diego exhibit has been provided by Sempra Energy Foundation.
The outdoor exhibit is offered free to the public and will be open through November 30, 2008. Select globes will also be on display inside the Museum. For more information, visit www.coolglobes.com.
